The Time Turner and the Tardis
A Harry Potter UNIVERSE/Hermione Granger Fan Fiction
by Darren Kelly
Hermione Granger was a plain but pretty girl with a slight overbite and a nest of wild long hair. Though only thirteen she carried herself with grace and dignity of a woman four times her age. She had just finished History of Muggles class and had to get to Potions. Of course both classes took place at the same time so she ducked into an alcove and pulled out the golden time turner that hung around her neck.
"One quarter of a twist should do the trick." Hermione said turning the device exactly one quarter and letting it go. The time turner spun. Time stopped around her and then slowly moved backwards. People began to walk back past, over and through her. Time sped up as she moved backwards in time.
A flash of blue wood and light pushed Hermione off balance dropped her to the floor with a thud.
"Ouch!" Hermione said sitting up rubbing her elbow.
"Who are you?" A strange fair haired woman, dressed in a long cream coloured coat asked helping Hermione up to her feet.
"I'm Hermione Granger," the girl with the wild long hair said, "and you are?"
"I'm the doctor." The woman said. "What are you doing in my Tardis?"
"Tardis?" Hermione asked. "Did you just make that word up?"
"It stands for time and relative dimension in space." The Doctor said walking back to the control console. "And I didn't make it up my grand daughter did."
"Your grand daughter?" Hermione questioned. "You're old but not that old."
"Thank you." The doctor said flipping switches and turning dials. "You ask a lot of questions."
"I have an inquisitive mind." Hermione said proudly.
"Good maybe you can figure out how you got on my time ship." The doctor said.
"Time ship?" Hermione asked. "The Tardis is a time ship?"
"It is indeed." The Doctor said as she flipped a lever and the Tardis' hum turned to a pulsating grind as it materialized.
"Then I might know how I got here." Hermione said.
"Good." The Doctor said as she headed for the door. "Well you can explain it to me on the go. Keep up."
As they stepped out onto a gravelly ground surrounded by high rock walls Hermione took notice that they'd stepped out of an olx blue police box. Unfazed she followed after the Doctor who moved quickly up a gravel pathway.
"You didn't say it." The Doctor said surprised. "Just about everyone who comes in and or out of the Tardis says it, but you didn't?"
"Say what?" Hermione asked.
"It's bigger on the inside." The Doctor said mocking all those who had said it before. "But since you didn't I can only deduce that you have experience with transcendental dimensional constructs."
"Well actually...." Hermione started but was rudely cut off.
"Though that is odd." The Doctor said. "As my instruments indicated I was passing through the Earth around the nineteen-nineties, then there is no way anyone from your planet should have that sort of knowledge, therefore you must be an alien! Are you from Gallifrey?"
The Doctor turned and pressed her ear to Hermione chest. Hermione gasped as the Doctor moved her ear from one side of Hermiones school robe to the next.
"Nope only one heart beat." The Doctor smiled. "Is that a school uniform? You're a child!!! Wait you said back at the Tardis you said you might know how you got here... but you never said how."
"I have hardly had the opportunity to speak!" Hermione protested.
"Ya, I do ramble on some times." The Doctor smiled. "Well I'm all ears now. So how did you do it?"
"Magic." Hermione said reluctantly.
"Don't be daft girl." The doctor said turning to continue up the steep path. "There's no such thing as actual magic. There is energy manipulation through technological advancement or through genetic mutation, which occasionally allows for energy sensitivity and manipulation."
The Doctor turned and pointed her sonic screw driver at the startled young girl who in turn drew her wand. The sonic screw driver hummed and whistled.
"Expelliarmus!" Hermione cast knocking the device from the doctors hand.
"What did you do that for?" The Doctor said picking up her sonic screwdriver. "I meant you no harm. Just taking a couple of readings and yep, as I thought, you are a mutation!"
"I am a human being," Hermione protested, "a witch, by muggle birth yes, but a witch and a human all the same."
"Yes human but with a stronger skeletal structure and skull density that's off the charts." The Doctor smiled handing Hermione the sonic screw driver to show her the unmistakable results.
"I can't make heads or tails of this." Hermione sighed frustrated with the strange woman.
"Well of course not." The Doctor said with look of surprise and haughty derision, "it's in Gallifreyan and you're English. Hang on!"
The Doctor snatched the wand from Hermione's hand.
"What do we have here?" The Doctor smiled running her sonic screw driver over the vine carved piece of wood. "Carved from vine wood, Ten and one quarter inch... something biologic inside. Residual readings of various energies. Eldritch, electrical, valsamic, light and something I just cant put my finger on."
"Please return my wand to me this instant!" Hermione demanded.
"All right." The Doctor said. "No need to get Umphy!"
"If you'd let me finish explaining," Hermione said defiantly, "I was at Hogwarts school for witch craft and wizardry. I wanted to take all the classes this year! So the headmaster leant me this Time Turner."
Hermione pulled the device by its necklace from its hiding place beneath her shirt.
"May I examine it?" The Doctor asked politely not wishing to further offend the sensitive girl.
"You may." Hermione said not taking it off. "But it stays around my neck."
"No problem." The Doctor smiled scanning the time turner. "Gold, glass, Gallifreyan sand, a micro stabilized quantum singularity, transdimensional field generator, eldritch to artron energy converter, materialization and dematerialization circuitry. It's like a mini Tardis you can wear around your neck. It's brilliant! Probably very old, and not of your Earth."
Hermione tucked it back in under her shirt for safe keeping. Hermione's instincts told this "Doctor" was not pleased such a device existed or was in the hands of someone like her. She was very much correct.
"I should take that from you young lady." The Doctor said. "It's very dangerous and could do irreparable damage to the time line."
"That is why the user must follow such strict rules." Hermione stiffened. "Not being seen, don't appear in the same place at the same time, don't do anything in the past that hasn't already happened."
"The Novikov Self-Consistency Principle." The Doctor said. " The theory of time-travel, stating that "Nothing can be changed because anything a traveler does merely produces the circumstances they had noted before travelling,"
"Yes, that's right." Hermione said surprised.
"And absolute poppy cock." The Doctor said. "Time is fluid and it takes a lot to mess up the time stream or start an alternate time line, but there are paradigm shifting moments in time, where if the right instances are interfered with, it could mess up the works."
"Well that is your opinion." Hermione said.
"You're a smart girl, I'm more than a hundred times your age. You figure out which is of us you believe is correct?"
"Ummm." Hermione was speechless.
"Right then." The Doctor smiled. "What were we doing here again?"
"I was following you." Hermione said confused.
"Really?" the Doctor said looking around. "Why?"
"You told me to keep up!" Hermione yelled.
"Right." The Doctor said. "Good job!
Hermione looked around at the rather stark and barren landscape. A single large building stood near the edge of the far side of the gravel old pit they'd landed in. For the first time, to Hermiones delight and amazement she noticed three orange suns sitting low on the horizon.
"Three suns?" Hermione gasped and smiled. "We're not even on Earth are we?"
"Three suns!" The Doctor laughed. "Of course that's why I'm here, follow me!"
The Doctor headed off towards the rather plain alien structure. It was about ten stories high and made of concrete or perhaps carved from rock itself.
"This planet is One nine nine seven GX." The Doctor said. "A marvel of human engineering! It was once a desolate rock that humans terraformed into a lush garden paradise!"
"But this is a desolate world from what O can see." Hermione said.
"Let me finish." The Doctor said wrinkling her nose. "Every ten thousand years the center sun release a massive amount of solar energy that burns the planet to a crisp. Luckily the scientist saw the neutrino build up in a predictive model and the people all got off one nine nine seven GX safely. That day was ten thousand years ago today"
"What!?!" Hermione yelled stopping dead in her tracks. "Does that mean the sun is about to eject and burn this world???"
"Yes it is!" The Doctor smiled and rubbed her hands together,
Then what are we doing here!?! Hermione asked.
"You'll see." The Doctor said. "Keep up."
"She's bloody insane." Hermione said as she followed.
A huge square doorway stood empty on one side of the building. Hermione surmised there were doors here once but they had more than likely burned off in the cosmic event. Inside was a grand foyer with an intricate dust covered stone work floor. Foot prints and drag marks through the dust lead to the stair well. The Doctor bent down to investigate.
"Looks like we're not the only ones come to see the show." The Doctor said with a genuine look of concern on her face. "Stay close."
Hermione drew her wand in case of trouble. The Doctor stayed focussed on the stairwell as they zig-zagged their way up. On the fifth landing the found him.
"Mak help Toh." The chitlinous bluish skinned alien with a pair of insectile antennae lay on the landing. A tear in his jumpsuit revealed a huge bleeding gash in his leg. The Doctor ran to the aliens side.
"Don't worry Mak Toh," the Doctor smiled, "We're friendly and we're her to help."
"Mak Thank you Toh". The alien smiled weekly.
"What is it?" Hermione asked.
"He not what!" The Doctor snapped. "Honestly! Humans can be the most racist creatures in the universe."
"I'm sorry." Hermione said. "I honestly didn't mean it that way."
"You're forgiven, now get over here and put some pressure on his wound." The Doctor ordered as Hermione did just that. "He is a Malmooth, a sapient humanoid species with insectoid features which inhabit the planet Malcassairo. The Malmooth society built huge organic underground cities known as conglomerates, on Malcassairo, similar to gigantic termite nests."
The Doctor searched through her pockets looking for something. "So tell me Mak Toh, what brings you to One nine nine seven GX today of all days?"
"Mak the lights Toh." Mak Toh said. "Mak Our ship crashed Toh. Mak Mak Toh only survivor Toh."
The Doctor dug deeply into the seventh of her coats her inner pockets.
"What are you looking for?" Hermione asked annoyed.
"Anything to help heal this Malmooths leg." The Doctor said. "He's in a bad way. If we don't stop the bleeding he's done for."
"Healing!" Hermione said with a sparkle. "Take over pressure duty." Hermione said switching spots with the Doctor.
Hermione opened her bag and pulled out a small glass vial that looked fairly empty other than small amount of sparkling clear liquid in the bottom.
"He told me that I would know just when to use this when he gave it to me a few weeks ago." Hermione said pulling the cork and pouring both drops of the liquid from the bottle onto the Malmooths open wound instantly healing it.
"Two questions?" The Doctor asked. "What was that stuff and who was 'He'?"
"The liquid is Phoenix tears from my headmasters pet, Fawkes." Hermione said. "And the HE is my Headmaster, Professor Dumbledore."
"Albus Dumbledore?" The Doctor asked.
"Yes!" Hermione smiled.
"I know old Albus!" The Doctor said helping Mak Toh to his feet. "Always did the best party tricks that man did. Wait! Magic! Oh that sneaky, cheeky, monkey! No wonder I could never figure them out."
"Mak Thank you Toh." The Malmooth said. "Mak Wonderful girl Toh."
"Indeed." The Doctor smiled. "Clever girl is our Hermione."
The Doctor helped him up the stairs to the roof. The suns setting, cast the sky in hues of reds and purples. The crashed Malmooth ship could be seen in the distance. It looked like it had come in hard and split into three distinct sections.
The Malmooth teetered weakly on his feet. Hermione looked around for something, anything she could use. A large piece of stone had cracked and fallen off a roof out cropping. Hermione cast a basic transfiguration spell turning the broken piece of ston into a simple wooden chair. Hermione carried it over and helped Mak Toh sit.
"Clever, clever girl!" The Doctor smiled. "That's what my wife always used to say. My wife? I was married! Am married? Will be married? No definitely was."
"To a woman?" Hermione asked rather shocked.
"When you find the person that's right for you, you know it." The Doctor smiled. "They might be who you always pictured but none of that matters when it all comes out in the wash. Look at you for instance. You're an old soul, to stodgy for your age."
"I beg your pardon?" Hermione snapped.
"Oh I'm not the girst to say that." The Doctor said honestly. "I guarantee you, the type you think is your type. Tall, muscular, dark, handsome, responsible will be the exact opposite of your real type. I can see you marrying a dopey, sloppy ginger with a good honest and brave heart."
"Ronald?" Hermione blushed said surprised.
"Oh!" The Doctor smiled. "You've already met. Well done."
As the last sun dipped below the Horizon the sky settled into inky blackness. Then a thin whisp of green energy flickered on the horizon. Tendrils of coloured light reached up through the atmosphere and filled the sky forming a shimmering rainbow dome in air above.
"Mak Beautiful Toh!" The Malmooth smiled.
"It's truly breath taking." Hermione said unable to contain her amazement and wonder. "I could stay here for ever and watch it. It's mesmerizing."
"The universe is a beautiful and wondrous place but can be cruel and terrifying as well Hermione Granger." The Doctor said. "Just remember that when all seems hopeless, real hope is found in you. Come on, we have to go."
The Doctor and Hermione helped Mak Toh up from the chair and down the stair case to ground floor. As they stepped outside the alien building. The colours flowed brighter and heavier in the air above. A slight breeze began to blow and slowly built in intensity as they neared the Tardis. Lightning flashed across the sky as many of the colours gave way to reds, oranges and yellows. The temperature quickly rose from comfortably cool to warm. Too warm for Hermiones liking.
"Those aren't just colours any more are they?" Hermione asked.
"Nope." The Doctor said picking up the pace. "Those are flames and they're a day early. We have to make it back to the Tardis."
"Mak Leave Mak Toh and save yourselves Toh." The Malmooth pleaded.
"Not today." Hermione said pulling out her wand. "ACCIO TARDIS!"
"That won't work on a sophisticated Time and space vehicle like my Tardis!" The Doctor snickered as the blue box rushed towards them door open, scooped them up inside and slammed the doors shut.
"I stand corrected." The Doctor said helping Mak Toh to a seat and then quickly back over to the time ships console with two twists and a flick the Tardis dematerialized with a whine and a groan. Solar flame swept the planet destroying One nine nine seven GX, once and for all. The star exploded into flame, energy and gas creating what would be named the Phoenix nebula.
The Doctor flew the Tardis back to Earth, roughly to the time and place the time turner collided with the time ship. The Tardis materialized just behind the school out of site of students and teachers. The Door opened and Hermione stepped out followed by the Doctor and Mak Toh.
"There you are Miss Granger." The Doctor smiled. "Home again, just where and when we bumped into one another, more or less."
"Thank you Doctor." Hermione smiled. "What's to become of him?" Hermione said nodding and smiling at Mak Toh.
"I'll get him to hospital." The Doctor said. "And then I'll get him home."
"Mak Thank you Hermione Granger Toh." The Malmooth smiled.
"Hermione You're very welcome Mak Toh Granger." Hermione smiled.
A look of delight crossed Mak Toh's face and he hugged the young witch with a hearty laugh.
The Doctor waved as they climbed back aboard the time ship and shut the door. The Tardis faded out as it dematerialized into the time vortex. Hermione checked the time. It was almost noon. Perhaps she would go inside for lunch. She hoped they were serving turkey sandwiches today. She had a taste for turkey.
"One quarter of a twist should do the trick." Hermione said turning the device exactly one quarter and letting it go. The time turner spun. Time stopped around her and then slowly moved backwards. People began to walk back past, over and through her. Time sped up as she moved backwards in time.
